CONCACAF zone.. Haiti shoot down Grenada as Antigua, SVG also win

 

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – Antigua and Barbuda upset Guatemala 1-0 to make a positive start to their third round tie in the CONCACAF zone of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers here Friday.Playing at the Vivian Richards Stadium in St John’s, a Myles Weston penalty in the 72nd minute was enough to settle the contest, and give the Antiguans an important advantage heading into the second leg in Guatemala City next Tuesday.

Guatemala, ranked 98th in the FIFA rankings, entered the game as favourites but failed to break down the organised Antiguans who are ranked 116th.

At the Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines also drew first blood as they beat Aruba 2-0.

The game was scoreless at half-time but burst to life when Tevin Slater gave the hosts the lead in the 51st minutes.

SVG then maintained their 1-0 lead well until the dying seconds of the game when Oalex Anderson scored to double their advantage.

There was no such luck for Grenada at the National Stadium in St George’s as the hosts stumbled to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Haiti.

Jean Eudes Maurice opened the scoring in the 27th minute but an Anthony Straker penalty in the 33rd minute brought Grenada level.

However, Mechack Jerome restored Haiti’s lead when he finished well in the 38th minute, to ensure the French Caribbean side led 2-1 at half-time.

Haiti confirmed the points in the 56th minute through a Duckens Nazon strike.

At the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Willemstad, hosts Curacao perished 1-0 to El Salvador through an Alexander Larin 12th minute goal while at the BMO Field in Toronto, Tosaint Ricketts scored in either half and Atiba Hutchinson added another, as Canada breezed past Belize 3-0.
