THE Government is committed to empowering the working-class and poor by reducing the disparity in the distribution of wealth across Guyana.Minister within the Ministry of Communities with responsibility for the Housing Department, Keith Scott, noted that he is pleased that leaders of the Guyana Postal and Telecommunication Workers Union (GPTWU) are interested in improving the living conditions of its members.
During a courtesy call on the minister on Wednesday, GPTWU’s President, Harold Shepherd and General Secretary Eslyn Harris, enlightened Minister Scott of the union’s desire to acquire land from the Ministry of Communities for about 200 of its members.
The minister encouraged the union to have its members apply for houselots, while advising that land will not be allocated en bloc. He emphasised that Government, though keen on building houses in cohesive communities, will also offer serviced lots to those persons who prefer to design and construct their own homes.
He noted that the turn-key houses which cost $4.9M, would be suitable for some members of the GPTWU.
The minister reiterated that Government is aggressively engaged in delivering on the promises to “Renew the Dream” by improving the quality of life of Guyanese in sustainable and cohesive communities.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority, Myrna Pitt, was also part of the meeting which was held at the minister’s Brickdam office.
