Blackpool’s relegation confirmed, Bournemouth go top

(REUTERS)-Blackpool will play in League One next season after Rotherham’s 1-0 win over Brighton left them with an impossible task to stay up.The Tangerines did not feature in yesterday’s Easter Monday programme in the Championship, but Matt Derbyshire’s early goal for Rotherham ensured they could not climb out of the bottom three.
Relegation has been inevitable in recent weeks, with the club winless since January as off-pitch problems destabilised the club’s season from the start, even as Bournemouth fought back from 2-0 down to beat Birmingham City 4-2 and go top.
Watford’s 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the early kick-off lifted them top for a few hours but Bournemouth recovered from a poor start thanks to goals by Steve Cook, Callum Wilson, Yann Kermorgant and Charlie Daniels.
Norwich City ended the day in second place thanks to a 2-0 home win over Sheffield Wednesday. They are level with Watford on 76 points, one behind Bournemouth and one ahead of Middlesbrough.
Derby County won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic and are four points behind Boro in fifth while Brentford, who occupy the last play-off place, came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest.
Elsewhere, Ipswich’s promotion hopes suffered a blow when they lost 2-1 at Huddersfield Town.
In the final game of the day, a last-gasp strike from Dave Edwards earned Wolves a thrilling victory over Leeds United after they had earlier thrown away a two-goal advantage.
Charlie Taylor had given Leeds a shock 11th minute lead before a double from Nouha Dicko and a 29th goal of the season from Benik Afobe seemingly put Wolves on course for a straightforward fourth successive win.
But a Danny Batth own goal and a sublime strike from Alex Mowatt drew Leeds level before Edwards saved Wolves with an 88th minute header.
