CARIFTA hopefuls in final warm up before trials

JUNIOR Athletes looking to compete at the March 7- 8 CARIFTA Trials will have a final opportunity to test their speed, strength and stamina and also to see what their competition has to offer.

From 11:00hrs today, the young athletes will compete at a Developmental Meet at the Guyana Defence Force Ground, Camp Ayanganna.
Instead of the non-traditional distances ran at the last two Developmental Meets, the athletes will do battle in the the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500, 3000m and 5000m track events and the Discus, Shot Put, Javelin and Long Jump field events.
This will be the third track meet the athletes will compete at this month.
On Saturday, groundsmen were prepping the outfield for today’s events.
Expected to put in appearances are the 2014 Senior and Junior Sportswoman of the year Cassie George and Junior Sportsman 400m specialist Jason Yaw.
George claimed Carifta Gold in the 1500m u-17 events last year, while Yaw was a bronze medal winner.
A number of juniors have shown they are in shape with performances at the last two meets – among them Compton Caesar, Onassha Rogers, South American Youth 400m silver medalist Natricia Hooper and Brian Roman
This third Developmental Meet was organised after coaches requested of the Athletics Association, a warm-up meet featuring traditional distances ahead of the Carifta Trials.
