Pork-knocker granted bail on robbery charge

JOHN Johnson, a Mahdia pork-knocker accused of robbing a man with a dangerous weapon, was Thursday granted $125,000 bail by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The court heard that on November 24, at 111 Miles, Mahdia, being armed with a knife, he robbed Eleazar Javier of one BLU cellular phone; seven pennyweights of raw gold and $210,000 in cash, a total of $287,000.

The father-of-one was not required to plead, since the charge is indictable. Police prosecutor, Adonni Innis objected to bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence; and also on the basis that Johnson had been convicted for a similar offence.
The defendant told the court that he was never identified in an identification parade.
Johnson was granted bail, and his next court appearance will be at the Mahdia Magistrates Court on January 19.
