Poole, London depart Thursday for Korea

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Terrence Poole and leading female middleweight boxer Theresa London will depart Guyana next Thursday for South Korea to participate in the Women’s World Boxing Championship scheduled for November 13 to 25 in Jeju Island.

GABA received the travel itinerary for the two yesterday and the 19-year-old London is the lone active female boxer with international experience, having recently returned from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and will engage in a ten-day training stint in Korea leading up to the championship.
Poole, who fills the dual role of manager/coach was an automatic choice since at present he is the only AIBA-certified Three Star coach in Guyana and that the World Championship requires Three Star coaches to officiate at ringside.
London, the daughter of former world heavyweight champion, Pamela `The Grenade’ London, also represented Guyana at the South American Championships in Chile earlier this year and was adjudged Best Female Boxer at this year’s Goodwill Games held in Guyana.
Poole, a veteran coach, picked up his Three Star certificate one year ago when he successfully completed the exams in Kazakhstan and is now one of eight in the English-speaking Caribbean. The name of Poole and London were last month submitted to AIBA for approval to participate.
The World Championship would be held around the same time that AIBA is staging its Congress. The last Congress was held in 2010 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and GABA would be represented by its president at the upcoming event.
Both are expected back home on November 27.
