GT&T on Tuesday made a donation of $500,000 to the Saraswati Vidya Niketan, a not-for-profit secondary educational institution at Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.

The financial contribution is in aid of the institution’s efforts to construct a science laboratory.
According to Swami Aksharananda, the Principal and Founder of the school, the institution was started 10 years ago with 35 students and 5 teachers and it has grown to a 475 student population with 32 teachers.
The school has earned its place as a top secondary school in Guyana, producing outstanding students at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations.
Last year one of its students, Rafena Mustapha, was awarded the CXC Caribbean Humanities Award.
Swami Aksharananda said that in order to provide a more rounded education, the science component needs to be added to the school’s curriculum. The school is offering science to a batch of students this year but there is need for a permanent science laboratory.
GT&T has commended the efforts of the institution and has expressed willingness to aid in efforts to further boost the level of educational output.
