… Action bounces off on Monday
PLANS ARE on stream for the staging of the 10th Linden Secondary Schools Under-19 basketball championship which is scheduled to bounce off this Monday, with matches being played at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court. The organisers, the Linden Amateur Basketball Association, announced yesterday that as usual several former Linden residents have continued to support the initiative which was berthed by former national women’s coach Linden Alphonso who now resides in the United States.
Alphonso is a former coach of the Victory Valley Royals basketball club which began staging this tournament and continues over the years to support the championship, which has grown to be the most sought-after championship among Under-19 basketball players in Linden.
Alphonso continues to be the main person behind the overseas sponsorship which provides all the trophies, replicas, medals, Championship T-Shirts and the Fabulous 5 T-Shirts, as well as basketballs for the tournament. He said the usual sponsors who have been with him over the years are continuing to support this initiative.
Among them are: Marlon Josiah who sponsors the Championship Trophy and replicas, Orin Louison the second place trophy and replicas, Kenneth Chapman the third place trophy and replicas and Lennox Allicock the fourth place trophy and medals.
Additionally the Championship T-Shirts for the winning team will be donated by Sylvester Mann and the All Star T-Shirts by Louis Webster, while Leon Moe has donated the basketballs to be used during the tournament and others for the LABA.
The Most Valuable Player-of-the-Final trophy is donated by Alphonso and the individual awards are sponsored by Maxie Stephens.
All the donations were made by former Linden residents who are now based in the United States but have an interest in giving the young basketball players a chance to excel at this level of the sport as they seek to develop the game locally.
