Construction worker remanded over ganja trafficking charge

CONSTRUCTION worker Christopher Jupiter of Lot M14-1059 Tucville Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was refused bail on a drug trafficking charge, yesterday, by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge, particulars of which said on Sunday, March 16 at Vlissingen Road, also in the city he had in his possession 15 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana).
Police Inspector Michael Grant, prosecuting, said around 17:00 hrs the police were on patrol on Vlissingen Road when the defendant was walking along the said road in a northerly direction. He was stopped and searched by ranks who found the illegal substance in his right side pants pocket in a plastic bag.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offence and the fact that he did not provide the court with any special reason why he should be granted bail.
The bail objection was upheld and the unrepresented defendant’s matter was transferred before Magistrate Judy Latchman for commencement of trial on April 7.
