Woman who sold narcotics to police fined, jailed

RUBENA Rogers, 36, of Lot 1 Stewartville Railway Line, West Coast of Demerara, was sentenced to three years imprisonment Thursday, after being convicted on four drug charges.The single mother of four stood calmly before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded guilty to all the offences.
Particulars of one charge said, on Wednesday, October 30, at her Stewartville home, she sold 2.8 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) to Police Corporal Mohamed Edoo.
She also sold the policeman one gramme of cocaine the same day and other convictions were for having one gramme of marijuana and 6.2 grammes of cocaine in her possession.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the court that ranks, acting on information, went to the woman’s home where Edoo, as a decoy made purchases and, subsequently, a party of policemen went there in plain clothes and indentified themselves.
The unrepresented defendant begged for leniency, stating that she has four children, between the ages of three and 12 years and has to maintain them and her home.
She claimed she encountered difficulties in her attempts to find a job but she was fined $30,000, along with three, year sentences, on each charge, to run concurrently.
