Husband remanded for assaulting, wounding and threatening wife with cutlass.

SURAJPAUL Dindial of Lot 6 North Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charges of assaulting, wounding and threatening his common-law wife, Karel Bissal, when he appeared on Tuesday, October 31, before Sparendaam Magistrate Alex Moore.

The police case is that on Saturday, October 26, Bissal left the home unknown to her husband; and upon her return, Dindial accused her of infidelity and beat her with a cutlass, while threatening to kill her. The children who were present during the incident began to scream, and neighbours summoned the police, who subsequently arrested Dindial.
Dindial’s defence was that this was the first of any such incident in all their years of marital bliss, and that it was his wife who had picked up the cutlass and had chopped him first, whilst he took away the cutlass and defended himself.
But asked to show the court any visible sign of chop marks on his person, Dindial could not, to the great amusement of the court.
Police Inspector Hally Anthony objected to bail being granted to Dindial, citing the prevalence of domestic violence in communities and the much devasting outcome that can result in such cases.
Dindial was therefore remanded until November 28, when the matter would be recalled for report.
