Cocaine convict returns to jail after September release

ALEX Persaud (no address given) was sentenced to four years imprisonment Thursday, for possession of narcotics and a utensil used for smoking cocaine. Before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, he pleaded guilty to the charges, particulars of which said, on Monday, October 25, at Stabroek, Georgetown; he had one gramme of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and a utensil used in connection with smoking it.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the court that the prisoner had been seen along with a group of men acting in a suspicious manner and ranks dressed in plain- clothes identified themselves before a search which revealed that Persaud had the utensil in his right side pants pocket with a string hanging from his mouth.
He was requested to open his mouth and a small container was found containing a creamish white rock-like substance.
Persaud confessed that he only came out of prison on September 12, after serving 18 months for simple larceny and was not getting a job since he had to provide a police clearance.
Apart from the jail sentence, Persaud was fined $45,000.
