Jeffrey Iqbal to perform at Diwali motorcades this weekend

THE Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s annual Deepavali motorcades continue this weekend with three spectacular events planned. Thousands of Guyanese will line the streets and converge at the various venues to enjoy the dazzling spectacle which was started almost 40 years ago.

From small religious pictures surrounded by a string of lights affixed to a car top or horse cart to motored exhibits with live depictions of gods and goddesses enhanced by special lighting effects, live bands and kirtan groups, our Diwali motorcades have significantly grown over the years.

The Sabha takes great pride in having created an event of this magnitude that brings out all Guyanese.

Today the East Bank of Demerara Praant of the Sabha will hold their motorcade at the Diamond Market Tarmac. Floats will leave from the Soesdyke Vishnu Mandir and the National Stadium parking lot at 6pm. A rich cultural presentation has been planned for Diamond.

The West Demerara Praant of the Sabha will also hold their motorcade today at the Oceanview Mandir Compound at Uitvlugt. The floats will leave from Ruimzeigt and Parika at 6pm and make their way to Ocean View Mandir compound, where there will be a grand cultural show commencing at 7pm.

The spectacular Georgetown/ East Coast of Demerara Motorcade takes place on Saturday November 2 (tomorrow). The fabulously decorated floats will assemble at the Shri Krishna Mandir, Campbellville from 6pm and will move west along Campbell Avenue into Sandy Babb Street, north into J.B Singh Road and east onto Seawall Road to the LBI Community Centre Ground.
Guyanese are encouraged to line the route of the motorcade to enjoy the fantastic display of Guyanese creativity. At the LBI Community Centre Ground, the stage programme starts at 7pm with performances by the Dharmic Nritya Sangh, Sookrane Boodhoo, Rekha Singh, Mona, the Caribbean Hotshots Band and E-networks orchestra.
In excess of $3.5M in cash and trophies will be presented to the winning floats in the small, large and commercial categories.
After pleasing thousands of screaming fans at the Sabha’s Diwali Utsav held at the Guyana International Conference Centre last Saturday, international recording artiste Jeffrey Iqbal will perform at the Ocean Vew Mandir and the LBI Community Centre Ground.
Jeffrey’s almost two-hour energy filled performance was followed by a trip to the Sabha’s Berbice motorcades on Sunday where he treated audiences to hit songs such as ‘Tere Mast Mast Do Nain’ and ‘Tere Naina.’
Jeffrey was first runner up in the 2009 Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa competition and went on to become the first American born to record for a Bollywood film. He is currently working on his own album to be released soon. Jeffrey will be supported by the E-networks Orchestra which was launched at Diwali Utsav. The band comprises of talented Guyana musicians as well as musicians from Mumbai who are in Guyana to teach free music classes – a service provided through the Reepu Daman Persaud Foundation.
Admission to all motorcades is free and no alcohol is allowed.
The Sabha has also organised rangoli competitions in several schools around the country to encourage student participation in the festival. On November 10 and 16, the Mahila Mandalee, women’s section of the Sabha, will host children’s Diwali party and concert at the Kendra in Georgetown and in East Berbice respectively catering for some 600 children.
