A 19-year-old peacemaker who attempted to part a fight between two young men at Rosignol last Friday is now in a critical condition on life support in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, after being brutally attacked by one of the parties in combat.
Weeping and embracing his two siblings, Shelton’s mother Sandra implored them not to even think about taking revenge. |
Shelton Malcolm Joseph of Ozamah Street, Rosignol, who was dealt a severe blow to the back of the head with a piece of 4”x4” wood has sustained serious brain injuries. He has suffered a ruptured brain and fractures to the head in two places, including the frontal lobe. There is internal bleeding, and clots have been detected in about 7 to 8 places in his head, caused by ruptured veins, his mother, Sandra Patricia Joseph told this newspaper yesterday.
The devastated mother recalled that around 17:30 hrs on Friday her son was riding his bicycle a short distance away from the Rosignol Stelling when a fight broke out between two men he apparently knew. Shelton got off his cycle and hurried over to the two men and attempted to make peace. However, scarcely had he turned away when one of the angry men picked up a piece of wood and lashed him to his head. He immediately collapsed.
Ironically, his grandfather Joslyn Ben was on the boat which was just preparing to move off for New Amsterdam when the incident happened and passengers who saw the incident from the boat, disembarked and began running towards the scene.
Ben said he heard someone say, “Watch! That person drop!” but he had no idea it was his grandson until he too ran over to the scene of the incident. On arriving there, he found his grandson, Shelton, lying on the ground unconscious.
Co-incidentally, Shelton’s aunt, Olivia Thomas was in the area at the same time, rounding up pigs and received the bad news. She immediately contacted other family members.
The injured man was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital. However, shortly after midnight he had to be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was operated on yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, family members yesterday huddled together, tearfully, outside the Intensive Care Unit as they lamented Shelton’s fate.
Weeping and embracing his two siblings, Shelton’s mother Sandra implored them not to even think about taking revenge. “What we have to do is pray; just pray; Shelton’s condition is delicate and we must focus on him. I don’t want any hitting back at all. I beg you all. No fight, no war,” the grieving mother insisted.
Shelton Malcolm Joseph who lives with his parents at Lot 15 Ozamah Street, Rosignol, is the third of three siblings – all males.
