30 hinterland power station operators complete training

AFTER undergoing four weeks of training, 30 hinterland power station operators graduated in power station operation and heavy diesel mechanics. The graduation ceremony  was held last Friday at the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) Sophia branch.

altThe training which focused on identifying and understanding the major components of a diesel engine, parts of a generator and describing the relationship of associated equipment to the generating unit was organised through a collaborative effort of the Office of the Prime Minister and GPL.
The training, which commenced on September 2  and concluded on Friday, attracted operators from Mahdia, Lethem, Orealla-Siparuta, St.Cuthbert’s Mission, Moraikobai, Port Kaituma, Kwakwani, Mabaruma and Matthews Ridge.
GPL’s Training Manager Dennis Swan highlighted that this was only the first phase of the training as the second phase will be conducted in the participants’ respective communities. He added that the second phase of training should commence within another three to four months. He added that in November, a similar training programme will commence for network operators residing in the same communities.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GPL BharratDindyal highlighted that there have been reports of major operation failures in these areas due to the lack of experience, hence the need for the training sessions.
He added GPL will continue to support such training interventions and expressed hope that the operators will return to their communities and contribute to it by demonstrating what they have learnt and implement it in their workplace.
Prime Minster Samuel Hinds told the batch that this was just the beginning of a still long road ahead. “You have taken your first step on your new journey.”
He congratulated them and encouraged them to return to their respective communities and show off their skills, to use their best abilities to carry out the functions at their workplaces, using what they learnt from the training.
