18 month fugitive surrenders, begins serving jail term

AFTER being a fugitive from justice for 18 months, Raymond La Fleur, who was sentenced, in absentia, to five years imprisonment for robbery under arms, surrendered himself at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam, Berbice, accompanied by his lawyer, Mr. Peter Hugh.

altHe has since been handed over to prison authorities and commenced his imprisonment at the Mazaruni Jail.
La Fleur, on July 18, 2010, had motored to Manabesie along the Canje River where he, armed with a gun, robbed Marlon Clarke called ‘Buck Man’ of $260,000.
Clarke, who had testified, recounted, in court, that he was in his motor vessel travelling in the opposite direction, when La Fleur, who was unmasked and in company with other masked individuals, moored alongside his boat, dealt him several lashes about his body, before forcefully depriving him of his money.
A report, was, subsequently, made at Central Police Station, New Amsterdam, from where sleuths arrested and charged the known robber.
Meanwhile, La Fleur was recently released from prison after being freed of a murder charge when the court ruled in his favour at the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry. The convicted felon was one of four prisoners implicated in the unlawful killing of fellow inmate, Sebastian Clata, who was, allegedly, beaten whilst asleep at the New Amsterdam Prison in June 2011.
Clata, who suffered head injuries, was rushed to New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted before being transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) but died in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) there.
Clata had faced a joint charge, with Andy Adams, for the 2007 murder of Nizamudeen Khan, a security guard, who was employed at a Rosignol sawmill.
In addition, the convict had been found not guilty of receiving a stolen Guyana Defence Force (GDF) AK-47 assault rifle, five counts of possession of ammunition without licences and having a firearm without the necessary permit.
