Mining Week slated for August 25-31 : – GGMC also hosting Pre-Emancipation Celebration today

MINING Week, the annual salute to the mining sector, will be celebrated from August 25-31 this year.

A media release from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment said that the theme of Mining Week 2013 which is being organised in partnership with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) will be “Green, Clean and Responsible: Securing the Future of Mining”.
The GGMC is also hosting a Pre-Emancipation Celebration today in recognition of the significance of emancipation as Guyana will be observing the 250th Anniversary of the 1763 Berbice Slave Revolt and the 175th Anniversary of Emancipation.
The Mining Week programme was proposed and approved by a sector-wide committee chaired by the GGMC.
The programme commences on August 25 with a Mining Week Walk. This will be followed by the 10th National Mining & Quarrying Conference being held simultaneously with the National Mining Exhibition on the 26th and 27th.
This 10th National Mining & Quarrying Conference event, the ministry said, will highlight the importance of mining to the national economy. Participants will also illustrate the future development of extractive industries.
There will be Education Sessions & Discussion Forum on August 28, a Tour/Outreach along with a Customer Appreciation Day on August 29, 2013, an Outreach to Mining Districts on August 30 and a Porknocker’s Day on August 31, to wrap up the observances, the ministry said.
The timings and venues of the various activities will be announced shortly.
Meanwhile, the ministry dismissed concerns that the GGMC’s 34th Anniversary celebrations and Bursary awards had been cancelled.
These activities will be integrated into the upcoming Mining Week 2013 activities, the release said.
