MoH driver refuses to take accident victim to GPH : …investigation launched

A MINISTRY of Health driver yesterday flatly refused to take an accident victim to the Georgetown Public Hospital. altaltThis happened when a motorcyclist suffered severe injuries when he slammed into a truck on Hadfield Street, just a stone’s throw from the back entrance of the Health Ministry.
Persons in the area who witnessed the accident said that the motorcyclist was riding in a reckless manner and ended up slamming into the truck.
The ministry driver was driving along Hadfield Street and was passing the accident scene when persons approached him and asked that he take the injured motorcyclist to the hospital.
Those who asked the driver to take the injured man to the hospital included employees of the ministry, a doctor and other persons who had converged on the scene.
The man who was driving a health ministry vehicle, and which was labelled MoH, stopped the vehicle, and after releasing that the injured man was lying on the road, bleeding from his nose and mouth, decided to drive the vehicle away without offering any assistance.
altHis comments before driving away were also heard by this reporter, who was also present on the accident scene, saying “Y’all try there, I have things to do, I don’t have time with that”.
Ministry workers who were on the scene said the matter would be taken to the office of the Permanent Secretary.
As word of the accident and the embarrassing action of one of its drivers got to the ministry, one official got into another ministry vehicle and transported the injured man to the hospital.
Contacted yesterday afternoon, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Leslie Cadogan was very upset when the incident was related to him.
He immediately promised to launch an investigation into the matter and the driver is expected to submit a report on what happened.

Cadogan said that it is unthinkable that a driver representing the Health Ministry would take such a position, and the incident could lead to his dismissal.
