Town Clerk controversy… : Mayor Green willing to work with Sooba until successor chosen

GEORGETOWN Mayor Hamilton Green has indicated that he is willing to work along and co-exist with the Acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba until a suitable candidate is chosen to officially fill the position. He said so in response to what Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker said regarding the removal of Sooba.
Whittaker had said the ministry would not be bullied into removing Sooba pending the appointment of a permanent Town Clerk.
Green said he and councillors will work with Sooba but not for a very lengthy time as he urged the minister to speed up the recruiting process.
Green maintained that the Council will try to prevail, but declared that the ministry cannot just say what it will do, as more action is needed to expedite the procedure for the recruitment.
Until then, the councillors will be on their best behaviour to bear with the situation.
Green said he understands that none of the recent applicants were qualified for the post and he is also moving with the ministry to help re-advertise for a suitable candidate.
The Mayor said he is very patient but added: “I hope I don’t have to go on the streets again.”
Minister Whittaker noted that interviews were conducted, but Sooba will stay in her post while the recruiting procedure continues.
Meanwhile, the utmost respect must be shown to her while she is still performing the duties of Town Clerk.
Whittaker disclosed yesterday that candidates to fill the positions of Solid Waste Director and City Engineer have been selected and should be confirmed publicly by the end of this week.
However, the vacancy for City Treasurer is still open, the minister informed.
