Teenager Taylor century sets up big U.S. victory

HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) — Teenager Steven Taylor, who was born in Florida of Jamaican parents, smashed 162 off 102 balls as the United States, Uganda and Oman drew first blood on the opening day of the six-nation 50-overs ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 tournament, on Sunday. But it was a miserable start for hosts Bermuda, who crumbled to a sobering 114-run defeat against Uganda, as the top two teams bid to advance to the next stage of qualifiers in New Zealand next year ahead of the 2015 World Cup.
Left-hander Taylor, 19, hammered 12 sixes and 12 fours as the U.S. piled up a massive 366-6 at Somerset — the smallest of the three grounds being used — but Nepal fought back bravely to reply with 272, former West Indies Test slow bowler Neil McGarrell, 40, claiming 3-42 from 9.5 overs as the Asian team lost by 94 runs.
Taylor was joined in the run spree by Jamaican Timroy Allen, who made 67. Basant Regmi took 2-46.
Skipper Paras Khadka led from the front in the Nepal reply, top-scoring with 73, while Sharad Vesawkar made 72.
Arthur Kyobe (53), Frank Nsubuga (51 not out) and Laurence Sematimba (42) were the leading run-getters in Uganda’s 222-7 at the National Sports Centre (NSC) in Hamilton, slow bowler Rodney Trott leading the Bermuda bowling with 2-34 from 10 overs.
Bermuda, who lost skipper Stephen Outerbridge and Janeiro Tucker to runs-outs, never coped with the bowling of Henry Ssenyondo as he returned figures of 4-24 from 8.3 overs.
Dion Stovell (17), Lionel Cann (17) and David Hemp (16) were top scorers as Bermuda slumped to 108 in 43.3 overs.
Oman crushed Italy by seven wickets at St David’s after dismissing their opponents for 110.
Aamir Kaleem scythed through Italy’s batting with 4-15 from 8.1 overs, Dilan Arsakulasuriya making 22, Peter Petricola 21 and Alessandro Bonora 20.
Skipper Vaibhav Wategaonkar (31) and Ghazanfar Iqbal (27) led the Oman reply.
