Festival City man jailed, fined for gun, bullets

ANTHONY Matherson, 20, of Lot 1979 Williams Street, Festival City, Georgetown has been charged following the police find of an illegal gun and bullets on Wednesday last.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry on Friday and pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.

Matherson admitted that he had a .38 Taurus revolver and three live rounds, without being the lawful holder of a licence.
Police Sergeant Seon Blackman, prosecuting, said about 16:00hrs that day, ranks on mobile patrol in Festival City saw the defendant, who was in company of two others, riding a pedal cycle and behaving in a suspicious manner.
The prosecutor said the defendant attempted to flee but was chased and apprehended and a search of his person yielded the revolver and ammunition in his pants crotch.
Matherson, when questioned, said the weapon did not belong to him but he found it on the seawall and was going to sell it, the prosecutor reported.
The defendant, himself, told the Court that he and two other friends had been at the seawall “burning a joint” and after they finished, he jumped off the jetty and landed on the gun, which he showed them and decided to take it home.
He claimed it was his first offence and asked for a reasonable sentence.
Matherson was then fined $100,000 and sentenced to three years imprisonment on each charge but the sentences will run concurrently.
