ICB Regional 4Day : Fudadin rescues Guyana with resilient half-century

DISCARDED West Indies middle-order batsman and former national captain Assad Fudadin yesterday rescued Guyana on the opening day of their sixth round West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional 4-Day match against Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. CCC won the toss and asked Guyana to take first strike in hazy conditions and within the first hour of play, sent back three of the home team’s batsmen – Rajendra Chandrika (4), Leon Johnson 24 and Narsingh Deonarine who failed to trouble the scorers – before the home side reached 225 for 7 at close of play with Anthony Bramble on an unbeaten 37.
Fudadin added 91 for the sixth wicket with Bramble, after posting a valuable 41 for the fifth with the dreadlocked Steven Jacobs 28, which helped revive the home team’s innings, even as Ryan Austin (3-72) and Raymon Reifer (2-28) looked to make inroads for CCC.
When Chandrika hit Kevin McClean back over his head for four to open his account, a solid innings looked in the making for the right-handed opener, but that was not to be as he feathered one through to Chadwick Walton off Kesrick Williams.
Johnson replaced Chandrika and hit McClean for a glorious four through backward square, followed by two more fours off Ryan Austin, before he looked to drive at one from Raymon Reifer and succeeded in offering Walton a catch, which the diminutive wicketkeeper took low to his left at the ankle of Floyd Reifer who was stationed at first slip.
In came Deonarine who picked out Akeem Dewar at gully, when he looked to slog-sweep a turning delivery from Austin to leave Guyana on 43 for 3 off 14.5 overs with Fudadin who was on 10, being joined by Ramnaresh Sarwan.
At lunch, Guyana were 81 for 3 off 28 overs with both Sarwan and Fudadin on 20, with the former batsman hitting McClean for two fours in one over, while Fudadin also struck the same bowler audaciously for four through point just before the break.
CCC removed a dangerous-looking Sarwan in the third over after the lunch break, when the batsman, who struck four fours in his 50-ball 28, fended a short delivery from Raymon Reifer and succeeded in offering the bowler a return catch at 90 for 4.
Steven Jacobs joined Fudadin and raised the team’s 100 off 38.5 overs, while they rotated the strike with well-judged singles, coupled with the odd boundaries and at the first water break after lunch, Guyana were 108 for 4 with Fudadin on 30 and Jacobs 9.
They pushed the score to 131, before Jacobs looked to sweep at one from Austin and was adjudged lbw, 20 minutes before the tea break for 28, as he added 41 for the fifth wicket with the former national captain.
Fudadin soldiered for Guyana, paddle-swept Dewar to long leg for four, followed by a six over wide midwicket as Guyana moved to 143 for 5, with his personal score reading 46 while Bramble was yet to score.
The 27-year-old Fudadin, who played three Test matches for the West Indies, reached his half-century off 166 deliveries, batting for 237 minutes and hitting three fours and his lone six as Guyana reached 148 for 5 at tea with Fudadin on 50 and Bramble 1.
After tea, Fudadin struck Raymon Reifer through point for his fourth four as he moved to 60 which, together with Bramble’s patient 20, pushed Guyana to 177 for 5 as they sought to give their team a good foundation in the face of disciplined bowling from the Caribbean students.
Bramble joined the boundary-hitting act, when he cut a short delivery from Shacaya Thomas twice through backward point for two of his three fours, pushing Guyana closer to the 200-run mark which they reached off 80.3 overs, courtesy of an Austin no-ball.
Bramble displayed confidence in his first match, when he steered a short delivery from Williams through the slip cordon to the vacant third man position for his fourth four, pushing Guyana to 217 for 5.
Just before the close of play, Fudadin who looked to emulate Shivnarine Chanderpaul and record a century for Guyana in this year’s tournament, played down the wrong line from a Nekoli Parris delivery and was bowled for a patient 89, ending a 91-run sixth-wicket partnership with Bramble.
Fudadin batted for 354 minutes, faced 263 balls and struck seven fours and one six in his 89 and was followed back to the pavilion by Veerasammy Permaul (1), who was caught by Dewar at leg slip in the final over off Austin, leaving Guyana on 225 for 7 at the close.
