FINALLY, what are indeed the most far-reaching plans for reform of the nation’s security sector has been announced; but most unfortunately the political opposition’s response has been centred on the person of the National Security Minister, rather than support the initiatives which they have not criticised.

It was quite clear for a while that an in-depth analysis and review of Guyana’s state security apparatus had been due. And this needs no repeating here, since all the reasons for such a necessity continued to be manifested via the challenges faced by the Guyana Police Force and their response to that. Therefore, since the political opposition has been one of the major critics of the system as operated, it was felt that the announced plans would have automatically garnered their ready support. Instead, the proverbial messenger is now the target of their sterile verbal assault.
Never mind what particular grouse they may have with the minister, who definitely has the most difficult and thankless of jobs – that of protecting citizens;what is paramount in Guyana at this time of the nation’s development, is that such reforms are necessary for the national well-being, socially and economically. It behoves that all responsible stakeholders, inclusive of the political party leaders, must support a plan that is sure to change the image of law enforcement in the public’s perception of the battle against crime, and create a society conducive to economic development. It must be restated that no investor comes to a crime-threatened environment. The opposition, of course, is well aware of this fact.
All must get on board for Guyana’s peace and stability, as these plans are not about the person responsible for its planning/implementation.
It is about the dignity of our country.
