WICB Regional Super50 : Nurse helps Barbados overcome Guyana by five wickets

DISCIPLINED bowling, aided by inept batting by Guyana, ensured Barbados defeated their opponents for the second time in six days, when they won their West Indies Cricket Board Regional Super50 encounter by five wickets at the Kensington Oval yesterday. After winning the toss and sending their opponents to take first strike, Ashley Nurse (4 for 22) who was later named man-of-the-match, Christopher Jordan (3 for 24) and Jason Holder 2 for 15) vindicated Kirk Edwards’ decision, as Guyana were bowled out for 111 off 40.3 overs.
Leon Johnson 28 and Assad Fudadin 25 were the top scorers for Guyana who were only allowed 10 fours in their innings by the home team, who in reply, reached 114 for 5 from 26.1 overs to follow up on their 93-run win in the 4-Day encounter last Monday.
Guyana started slowly with Trevon Griffith 17 (3×4, 38 balls) and Rajendra Chandrika 14 (41balls, 1×4) adding 34 for the first wicket from 12 overs, with the latter working Holder to fine leg for his lone four off the final delivery of the second over.
Griffith also got into the boundary-scoring act, when he drove Jordan through point, but the home team tightened up on their line and length, backed by disciplined fielding, as the visitors faced an uphill task to up their scoring rate.
Griffith was the first to go, chasing at a wide delivery from Holder and succeeded in feathering a catch to Shane Dowrich at 34 for 1 which became 37 for 2, following the dismissal of Chandrika, who was caught at slip by Javon Searles, also off Holder.
Johnson and Fudadin added 44 for the third wicket from 12.4 overs, with Johnson hitting Searles back over his head for four, followed by an audacious cut through point, before he was lbw to Nurse’s final delivery of his first over and his team’s 25th, at 81 for 3.
Prior to his departure, Johnson raised Guyana’s 50 from 15.5 overs – a testament of the slow scoring by the visitors, who lost Steven Jacobs (10) and Derwin Christian (0) to the bowling of Jordan, to be 99 for 5.
The spin of Nurse ensured Guyana did not stage any dramatic recovery, as they crumbled from 99 for 3 to their eventual total, losing their last seven wickets for 12, including the prized wicket of Christopher Barnwell, who was magnificently caught by Edwards, his opposite number, at short mid on without scoring, off Nurse.
Two fours which pierced the cover region like a hot knife through butter off the bats of Kraigg Brathwaite (10) and Rashid Boucher may have brought smiles to the home team players.
However, the Guyanese made them disappear, by removing Brathwaite who was brilliantly caught by Barnwell at slip off Wintz, Edwards, who lost his middle stump to Ronsford Beaton and Kyle Hope, who was beaten by Wintz’s ability to swing the ball back. He lost his off stump without scoring leaving Barbados on 30 for 3 in the 8th over.
Boucher eased the shackles by hitting Wintz over extra cover for the first six of the contest, pushing Barbados to 42 for 3 in the final over of the first powerplay, before he hit his wicket two balls later, leaving Barbados on 42 for 4 off 9.4 overs.
Jonathan Carter drove Wintz, who was guilty of overpitching at times, past a diving Fudadin at extra cover for four, before Barbados reached their 50 from 11.2 overs, with Carter on 9 and Kyle Mayers 1.
Spin in the form of Jacobs was introduced by Barnwell in the 14th over with Barbados needing 62 more to win, while he took a catch at mid on to account for Mayers (4), when the left-handed batsman got a top edge off Beaton.
Controversy raised its head, when Devendra Bishoo bowled Carter with his first delivery, only for the umpires to say not out, ruling that Christian disturbed the stumps before the bail was dislodged.
All this was after Dowrich played a confident upper cut, followed by a disdainful pull for four off Beaton, before he sealed the win for his team by sweeping Zaheer Mohammed-Shadir to the vacant fine leg position for his fourth four.
Dowrich was unbeaten on 28 (30 balls) Carter on 38 (62 balls), as they added an even and unbroken 50 runs for the sixth wicket, with both batsmen hitting four fours in their individual total against the bowling of Wintz (3-40) and Beaton 2 for 29.
