Tech Talk – Valentine’s Day Shopping Guide 2013

THIS week’s column marks TechTalk’s first anniversary. I am indeed happy, and must congratulate all you ‘tech’ readers for what has been a very successful year for this column. Keep on bridging the digital divide, my fellow Guyanese!

altValentine’s Day is said to be one of the most romantic time of year worldwide. But, here’s what! Many people don’t know what really is Valentine’s Day, or what it means; all they know is, ‘Hey! It’s Valentine’s Day! Time to get my loved one a gift!
Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly known as Valentine’s Day, is observed each year. It is based on one early saint named Valentine. He was imprisoned for performing wedding ceremonies for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians who were persecuted by the Romans. During Valentine’s imprisonment, he is said to have fallen in love with the daughter of his jailer. Legend has it that before his execution he wrote “From your Valentine” as his way of saying farewell to her. Though there are many views and ideas on how Valentine’s Day came about, one thing is surely conformed: Its date, February 14. As the day approaches, many find themselves searching for the perfect gift for their loved ones. If you’re yet to decide on the perfect Valentine’s Day present, particularly ‘tech’ gifts, I am here to help.
A typical Guyanese habit is to wait until the last minute to look for a present. Please! Let’s change that this year! Know what your significant other’s hobbies and interests are, and shop for the best product that complements their personality. With every gift you give, you want the receiver to have a “Wow!” moment when they first set eyes on it.
Especially with ‘tech’ gifts, if you can personalise it, by all means, do so. Show your significant other how much you love them, as well as how well you know them. Whether it’s a custom-made design or a personalized engraving, just do it! Go to the signature or graphics shoaltp and nice-up your gifts! It will make a huge impact!
While you do have to keep your budget in mind, it’s not mandatory that you spend more than you want to. Try to find a gift that says a lot to your Valentine, but not to your bank account. The best thing to remember is that a Valentine’s Day gift is not just for Valentine’s Day.
Here are some top gadgets available in Guyana that you may find useful for this year’s Valentines.
iPad’s seem to be on everyone’s gift-list lately, and we love the new mini for both its extra portability and lower price tag. The mini has a 7.9″ display, and weighs a scant 0.68 lb, while offering many of the features of a full-sized iPad, like FaceTime, HD video recording, the voice assistant, Siri, and access to Apple’s large selection of apps, movies, music, and books in iTunes.
If your loved one reads every spare moment they have, there’s no better gift than the latest, greatest e-reader. Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite has a screen that’s crisp, and doesn’t glare in bright light, but makes for easy reading in the low light; essentially, the Paperwhite combines the best features of both paper books and tablets for an ideal reading experience.
You’ve probably heard the term “smartphone” tossed around a lot. A smartphone will be based on an operating system that allows it to run applications. Smartphones have alttaken a big bite out of the market Guyanese so love, to use their Blackberry, Samsung Galaxy, Nokia and Apple’s iPhone. They all run on different operating systems, which make them unique. Any of the above will surely “Wow!” your loved one this year. But before you make a choice, find out what application best suit your Valentine. .
MP3 players come in many sizes and storage capacities, but they typically are portable devices that are small enough to fit easily in the user’s hand. Most have enough memory to store hundreds or even thousands of digital audio files, which usually are songs. The files usually are placed in an MP3 player’s memory by connecting it to a computer, and transferring the files to the device. Some advanced models of MP3 players, however, might allow the user to download the files directly from the Internet.
One of the many things a person might desire to have in their home is a computer. These days, a home without a personal computer (PC) is considered to be almost incomplete. It’s a necessity. Desktop and laptop computers are essential devices that can help to digitalise your loved one’s life.
The next big thing on my list is the printer. One can have many designs and pictures in their computers, but when it comes to getting it out, you can only think one thing: A printer. So, if your dear Valentine has a computer, make them go wild with one of the many printers available. Make sure ink is readily available before you choose. A Digital camera or Camcorder might best suit you partner, if he or she is the adventurous type. Don’t forget to look out for cool watches, binoculars, GPS, multimedia sunglasses, wireless speakers, mouse and Bluetooth.
Sign-up! Yes! Having a computer or a mobile device without having Internet is like listening to music without speakers. Use our many providers and various services to get your cherished one on the go, and sign-up. Get cable TV; make your Valentine as comfortable as you possibly can so they can  watch their favourite cricket match or soap opera to their heart’s content; better yet, do so by getting them a flat-screen LCD/LED smart TV . Oh, yeah!
All of the gifts ideas and devices can be found in most of the computer or electronic stores nationwide. But hurry! As only the early bird is able to catch the worm. Do let me know if you get your desired gift; if not, I can surely assist. Drop me a line at computer.resources@rocketmail.com.
