Epileptic, 44, drowns at Mon repos

THE body of a 44-year-old Triumph man, who went missing on Tuesday, was yesterday discovered floating in a trench under a bridge at the junction of the Railway Embankment and Mon Repos Access Road, East Coast Demerara.

altThe gruesome discovery of the body of Rajesh Balkarran, a known epileptic, of 20 Dr. Miller Street, Triumph, was made around 12:30hrs by school children on their way to school.  When found, he was face down in the water, and he was wearing a polyester shirt and a pair of  black trousers,  He wore no shoes.
Relatives said it would appear that he was sitting on the bridge when he developed a seizure and fell into the water unnoticed and drowned.  When pulled out of the water by undertakers from the Lyken Funeral Parlour, the body was bloated, but bore no marks of violence.  Police who arrived at the scene soon after the body was discovered witnessed the proceedings.alt
Several of Balkkarran’s relatives and other members of the community rushed down to the scene on learning of the tragedy.  One of  Balkarran’s aunts, Sancahrrie, also called Baybo, who broke down and wept as his body was pulled out of the water,   related that  his parents were both dead.  His mother died several years ago in childbirth, leaving three sons. After the death of their parents, the boys were taken over by their grandparents until the time of their death.
