$4.5M gold robbery accused refused bail

DAVID Mingo alias ‘Animal’ was refused bail yesterday on a robbery under arms charge.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged, indictably, with having, on November 19, 2012, being armed with a gun, robbed Roopnarine Kardokain of 12 ounces of raw gold, valued $4.5M, property of Onkar Persaud.
Police Inspector Burgette Grant, prosecuting, objected to pre-trial freedom for Mingo on the basis of the seriousness of the offence.
She said the accused works with the virtual complainant and, that day, armed with a handgun and a stick, he lashed the virtual complainant and fired a shot in the air, demanding money that was owed him.
The prosecutor said the accused then took a crowbar, opened a safe, took out the raw gold and made good his escape.
According to her, a report was made but the police took a long time to locate the accused who went into hiding.
The accused denied the allegation and told the court he worked with the virtual complainant for six months without payment.
The case will be called, again, on February 5.
