GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup … Camptown, Riddim Squad battle for crown tonight GDF, Santos in third place showdown

THE second annual Guyana Football Association (GFA)-organised Banks Beer Knockout Cup comes to a close tonight with what is expected to be an intriguing showdown for the grand prize, between Sunburst Camptown and the underdogs Riddim Squad.

Once again, the action takes place at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda from 18:00hrs with the third place showdown between the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Santos Football Club where the winning team will pocket $1.5M and the losers will walk away with $1M.
In the final battle which kicks off at 20.00hrs, last year’s third place finishers, Camptown, will take on the rampant Riddim Squad team who have proved they can hold their own with big victories over last year’s runners-up, Fruta Conquerors, and the recent 2–1 win over GDF on Sunday night in their semi.
The victors of the tournament will cart off the top prize of $4M while the runners-up bags $2.5M.
This past Sunday the action continued at the GCC ground with the semifinals as Camptown sank Santos 3–0 during extra time to move on to the final in the curtain-raiser of the double-header that had Riddim Squad pulling off yet another upset to make it into the final. Riddim Squad defeated GDF 2–1 coming from behind.
In the opening match on Sunday night, Santos and Camptown battled to a goalless after the first and second halves with the two teams trading shots. However, it was the fitness of Camptown that eventually gave them the upper hand.
Peter Parks scored in the eighth and 28th minutes extra time, while his teammate Jamal Codrington scored in the 17th minute.
In the feature match, neither GDF nor Riddim Squad could find a goal in the first half but GDF drew first blood just seven minutes into the second half (52nd) compliments of Clifford Garraway. National Junior Sheldon Hope equalised for Riddim Squad five minutes later to put the game back in the balance.
Amos Ramsey got an opportunity to score in the 76th and took full advantage of it to put Riddim Squad in the lead. That goal was one the opposition had no answer for as they settled for defeat.
