Thief goes back same day released from prison

A MAN who was released from prison on Monday, after serving a six months sentence for simple larceny, will have to spend another six months there for the same offence.

Vickram Sookdeo (no address given) appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded guilty to the charge, which stated that, on December 3, he stole $6,000 from Nanda Persaud.
Police Corporal Seon Blackman, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant was at her stall counting money when the defendant went up to her and snatched some out of her hands.
The prosecutor said the convict committed the latest offence the same day he was freed from prison, having served time for stealing a bicycle.
The prisoner told the court he needed to pay his passage back to his Berbice home and took a chance by snatching the cash from the woman.
The magistrate remarked to Sookdeo that it seemed he did not learn a lesson while being imprisoned.
