Over 91 communities to benefit from rehabilitated grounds : -Every Region would have benefitted

OVER 91 communities within eight of the 10 Administrative Regions in Guyana, will benefit from rehabilitated and upgraded grounds, thanks to the Government of Guyana, who has over the years, allocated a sum of money to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS), for such purposes. Following brief remarks from Minister within the MCYS Dr. Frank Anthony in his office yesterday, eight Regional Education Officers (REO) received warrants ranging from G$1M to G$3M, for such purposes, after the Ministry received requests from several groups within various communities across the said regions.
“As you know this year, we have been allocated G$100M for the purpose of rehabilitating community grounds across the country. The request really emerges from the various communities for help with their grounds, and a panel which comprises officials from the Ministry of Sport and Local Government would review these requests.
The Ministry of Local Government, who is stationed in every Region, would be able to give us information on what might be priority in those regions and the joint committee would review the requests and work out the allocations” stated Dr. Anthony.
He said on the first occasion, close to G$46M was distributed earlier this year, hence yesterday’s distribution of warrants for the total sum of G$54M, brought an end to this year’s allocation of G$100M, in which all the Regions would have benefitted from the exercise.
According to Dr. Anthony, the reason the MCYS used the REOs for the purpose of allocating the respective sum to the individual communities, has a lot to do with accountability.
“Last year we did a similar project in which most were implemented and this year we expect the same. The reason why we are going through the REOs is because we want to have accountability for the monies issued.
If we give to a community group and go back and in no way possible locate such a body would be chaotic. However, by going through the Region, it will help us a great deal with accountability, which means the groups who have made requests of us for assistance, are asked to go through their respective regions to uplift that amount,” added Dr. Anthony.
He said the work, for which the monies have been allocated, will be supervised by the Regions and will be audited by the accounting officers of that Region, a fact that was highlighted and punctuated by one of the REOs.
Both St Cuthbert’s Mission and the Mackenzie High School received G$2M towards their rehabilitative purposes, while Queen’s College received G$3M which will go towards the construction of a new pavilion on that school’s playfield.
“Queen’s College got that amount, since their project is valued at G$15M of which their Parent Teachers’ Association have undertaken to raise the remaining sum in order to ensure the full success of that project and to date they have been doing a fabulous job, for which we are pleased,” posited Dr. Anthony.
All of the REOs were high in praise for the Government of Guyana and this initiative, since they feel it will go a long way towards assisting with sports and other social activities within the respective communities who are the sole beneficiaries.
