Cricket Broadcaster recovering well from cancer : ‘Mental strength amazing’-Devers : “God is a great God and I am a living testimony to his might”

Those were the words of Guyanese International Cricket Broadcaster and Journalist Sean Devers who is in his third week of a six-week radiation treatment for level two brain cancer at the Brian Lara Cancer Centre in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The 42-year-old Devers had surgery done to remove a brain tumor on October 2 and was then informed he had cancerous brain cells that were missed when the tumor was removed, resulting in the radiation treatment being done at a further cost of G$5 Million.

“When my son Ricardo, in tears, told me I had cancer after the surgery was completed I could have drowned myself in self pity but I knew I had to be strong mentally and fight. I have developed an amazing level of mental strength and the faith and belief that God will see me through this. I now look for the positives in my life, “Devers said from Trinidad.

Devers informed that a month after the surgery he was struggling to put five words together in one sentence and there was no motor skills in his right hand due to the surgery.

“My speech is now almost back to normal while although my hand is still very weak and I can’t sign my name, all the motor skills are back” the father of three disclosed.

He said he was thankful to all the people and Companies in and outside of Guyana who continue to offer financial and moral support in his time of need and was especially high in praise to former West Indies Captain Brain Lara for the role he played in ensuring treatment at the Cancer Centre named after him.

Devers also commended Ramnaresh Sarwan, another ex-windies skipper and long time friend for his support.

“I was told that the Government of Guyana, through the Health Ministry this week approved a further contribution of G$2 Million towards the cost of my bills at Brian Lara Cancer Centre and I am very grateful for that offer.

However, because of the donations from everyone and the discount from Brian (Lara), the cost for the surgery and the radiation treatment, has been fully settled,” Devers informed.

Devers explained that he hoped that because the Health Ministry’s contribution had already been approved, although a bit late, it could be put in fund for some other person who had represented Guyana in Sports and was suffering from a life threatening illness, since the Sports Ministry had no such safety net in place for former National athletes.
It was revealed that Devers, who is scheduled to be in Trinidad for further tests until next year, still has to handle additional medical cost – like a weekly blood test at the St Clair Medical Centre where he performed his surgery, MRIs and the cost for his medication in addition to hiring a car to take him for his daily visits for radiation.

“While the cost for surgery and radiation are out of the way all the little medical cost adds up and only recently Imran Khan from the West Indies Cricket Board contacted me to let me know the regional board was willing to offer some financial assistance. I am very grateful for all the help I am getting since I have not been earning a salary since October.

I am trusting in God. If it is his will I will be back on the radio again doing what I love. But for now I am taking things one day at a time and not rushing my recovery,” an upbeat Devers concluded.
