Culture Ministry pays tribute to Pamela Maynard

THE MINISTRY of Culture, Youth and Sport offers its condolences to the family and friends of the late vocalist, Pamela Maynard who died on Sunday in Canada. The ministry is aware of Ms. Maynard’s sterling contribution to popular entertainment, both during her formative stage and as an established artiste on the international scene, according to a statement from the ministry.
Her vocal range and versatility in all categories of singing placed her amongst the more recognized of Caribbean artistes. Reportedly, she frequently offered assistance to fellow Guyanese artistes during their own overseas stints. From Fountain AME School concerts, to local stages with the GDF Whirlwind Band after her real “Discovery” by Eze Rickcliffe and the Yoruka Singers, Pamela  was top amongst female vocalists of the seventies and eighties.

Maynard also retained her own unique Guyanese sound, unlike others who sought to acquire other accents, even when she shared the stage with top flight entertainers such as Wendy Alleyne, Sparrow, Jimmy Cliff, Bryon Lee, Ray Charles, and the Drifters.

From promoters and choreographers, to musicians and singers, Guyana has suffered significant losses this year so far. Whilst popular entertainment is private sector driven, the ministry, from time to time, seeks to promote and involve young private, individual artistes and groups whenever it hosts national public events.

Last here for a local Music Awards show a few years ago, Pamela revealed her itinerary throughout Europe, then Sierra Leone with Beenie Man.
“May the life and work of Pamela Maynard inspire the younger generation of singers to strive for her standards of vocal excellence,” the ministry’s tribute concluded.
