COMMISSIONER of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), Karen Livan, retired yesterday after 37 years of ‘excellent service’ to the Commission and the Government of Guyana. She is Guyana’s first female geologist.
At a farewell ceremony hosted by the GGMC yesterday, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud, commended Livan for her hard work and commitment to the sector and miners. She was also praised for her optimism and work ethic by colleagues.
Karen Livan, a Government of Guyana scholar, is a graduate of the University of Wales and holds a BSC Honours Degree in Geology. She joined the GGMC in 1975 as a geologist, and was appointed Manager of the Geological Services Division in 1989. She was then transferred to the Environmental Division as a Manager in 1998, and was subsequently appointed Deputy Commissioner on April 1, 2011.
