Over four-month period… Green Acres pupil sweeps GNNL QUIZ prizes

GUYANA National Newspapers Ltd., printers and publishers of the Chronicle newspapers, yesterday announced the winners of its Master Mind Quiz Competition for period March to June 2012, and presented them with prizes.
The prize winners were for the periods February 19 to March 17; March 18 to April 14; April 15 to May 12, and May 13 to June 9.
Sarah Garrido of Green Acres Primary Group made a clean sweep of all four first prizes, amassing a total of 6,167 points over the four-month period, consistently scoring higher points in each round.
She was also congratulated by the stakeholders for her stellar performance at this year’s sitting of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examination, at which she ranked seventh best candidate at the national level.
The modest Garrido, who earned herself a place at Queen’s College (QC), credited the Master Mind Quiz for her performance, declaring that it played a great part in preparing her for the NGSA.
“I must say the quiz played a great part in helping to prepare me for the exam, since a lot of the questions that came in the exam had come earlier in the competition,” she disclosed.
Jelena Arjune, with a total of 5,805 points, also starred in the competition and won multiple prizes.  She, too, maintained her position throughout the contest over the last months, placing second on each occasion.

In his opening remarks to the gathering, which included a panel of key stakeholders, prize winners, their parents, teachers and staff of GNNL, Acting GNNL General Manager Nandkumar Puran  welcomed those present and apologised for the presentations having been delayed over the last few months.
Brainchild
He also offered an excuse for the absence of GNNL Board Chairman Keith Burrowes, whose brainchild the quiz that was inaugurated a year ago is.
Mr. Puran complimented the website developer, Mr. Girendra Persaud, and other stakeholders, like Mr. Courtney Perry, Mr. Kenneth Sukhdeo, Mr. Calvin Marks and others, for their instrumentality and dedicated work towards implementing and sustaining the project.
The speaker lauded the stellar showing of the students who have been consistently participating in the competition, taking note of their zeal and enthusiasm.
Taking pride in the initiative, he expressed hope that the game can be pushed to a higher level in the future, and that the new faces present could serve as a springboard to jump-start the process of encouraging wider participation.
Puran also recognised the presence of senior Republic Bank officials, noting that the institution is one of the sponsors of the quiz, and expressing gratitude for the Bank’s support.
Representing the Bank were Ms. Janice London, Head of the Training Division in the Human Resource Department, and Ms. Sonia Rodney, who both presented cheques to the top performers.
London remarked that Republic places a high premium on education, training and development, adding that for those reasons it is very proud to partner with GNNL in the quiz.
She tendered her congratulations to the young participants of the quiz, and applauded GNNL for moving in that direction. She also added that promoting the Master Mind Quiz is evidence that the Guyana Chronicle is very much interested in having young people develop their minds or mental faculties.
