East Coast Demerara schools prepared for reopening

SCHOOLS on upper and lower East Coast Demerara are almost set for the Monday September 3 reopening.
The Guyana Chronicle visited several of them yesterday to get a first-hand look at what was being done to make the students more comfortable, especially on their first day.
This newspaper found that works were in progress and the head teachers were on hand to oversee them. A visit was also paid to the Regional Education Office of Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) under which purview the schools function.
The head teacher of Annandale Secondary School was having meetings with various Heads of Departments and they could not have been disturbed. However, it was learnt that the discussions surrounded the handling of expected crowds on Monday as numerous new students would seek to be enrolled.
The teachers were also encouraged to complete their syllabus on time and submit reports where applicable.

At Buxton Secondary, the only persons present were the head teacher, security guard and a cleaner since the rest of the school was in order and the garbage was being burnt. The headmistress was reorganising her office.
Over at Paradise Secondary, the head teacher and her staff were busy cleaning the interior of the building and re-arranging furniture, having put away some broken pieces.
Perfect condition
The cleaner was attending to the lower flat but a teacher said the school will be ready and in perfect condition for the reopening on Monday.
At Hope Secondary, the security guard and the female who operates the canteen were present. Weeders were awaiting f
urther instructions as the machines they attempted to use could not deal with the bush and small trees.
The Department of Education has a tractor that will, eventually, have to be employed for the task.
The vegetation, apart, the sanitary blocks were being cleaned.
In the neighbouring village of Ann’s Gove, nothing seemed to be out of place as the school compound was spick and span while the headteacher was effecting an enrolment even as the cleaner went about her business of sweeping, mopping and arranging the classrooms.
At President’s College, in Golden Grove, the Deputy Head Teacher was locked in a meeting but a scaffold was at the back of one of the recently rehabilitated dormitories where a huge hole had been patched and cupboards were being painted.
Earlier yesterday, the head teacher had announced that the school was in a position to reopen and no issues would have to be faced on opening, although she admitted that there were a few leakages in the school’s roof, of which the Education Department is aware and has assigned its maintenance team to fix the
problem.
Several parents
At the Regional Education Office, several parents gathered to enquire or seek clarifications on placements for the children while others sought to finalise transfers, too.
Meanwhile, it was observed that not only government schools had undergone preparatory works ahead of the Monday
resumption.

Academy of Apex Education at Montrose was having its fence painted and the name redone.
Inside, the institution has three campuses and a student population that travels from as far as Georgetown, East Bank, West Bank and West Coast Demerara.
