Amerindian Month celebrations start with prayers tomorrow

THE nine Amerindian communities across Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) will start Amerindian Month celebrations with prayers tomorrow.
Toshoas and councillors will congregate with residents and pray for God’s blessings during the month that will showcase Amerindian culture, locally manufactured products and development in their respective villages.
Toshoa of Tapakuma, St. Deny’s Mission, Ms. Doreen Jacobis said they will stage their Village Day on September 30.
According to her, villagers will also be involved in self-help work to clean public buildings and “brighten up” the village, cutting tree limbs hanging over the roadway.
Jacobis said, during the month, she will be pushing for the Regional Administration to grade and rehabilitate the road to the village.
The Village Day programme will feature traditional Amerindian dances and poetry, cricket and volleyball competitions.
She said several types of Amerindian food, including cassava bread will be on display along with craft and nibbi products.
Jacobis said an Information Technology (IT) project is expected to be launched during the month.
Meanwhile, Mainstay villagers will be involved in a community work day on the village road September 8.
Toshoa of that village, Mr. Joel Fredericks said their women folks will participate in a workshop on September 15 and on September 18, join Tapakuma villagers to trim tree limbs overhanging the road that connects the two villages.
Fredericks said, on September 25, youths will be given a talk on drugs and alcohol.
Mainstay/Whyaka will hold its Heritage Day on September 30 and Mashabo residents would be engaged in a community work day cutting logs in the backdam.
They are also slated to do self-help weeding and maintenance of public buildings on September 23.
