Motie-Kanhai, Pereira spin Guyana to 96-run victory

BAYFIELD, Barbados (CMC) – Spinners Shawn Pereira and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai shared all ten wickets between them as Guyana crushed Leeward Islands by 96 runs, two minutes after the scheduled tea-interval, to kick-start their campaign in the opening round of the WICB regional Under-19 championship. Chasing a challenging 228 to win, at the St Catherine Sports Club, Leewards were routed for 131.
Leg-spinner and captain Pereira bagged six for 40 from 23 overs and Motie-Kanhai four for 65, to end with match-figures of eleven for 96 from 55 overs.
The Leeward Islands’ collapse began in the sixth over when Darren Hobson was caught off Motie-Kanhai.
Duan Webb and Akeem Saunders added 39 for the second wicket. However, three balls before the lunch interval, Saunders fell to Pereira for 20.
Leewards were reeling on 57 for two at the break and at the resumption Omavi Matthew was lbw to the final delivery of the over .
Pereira had Webb caught by Romario Shepherd for 24 and Deno Barker played down the wrong line to Motie-Kanhai and was bowled.
In consecutive overs from Pereira, Asharan Hodge pulled a short delivery straight to short mid-wicket and Tristan Hurley missed a straight ball and was bowled.
Hodge made a patient 25 while wicketkeeper/batsman Dymon Parris got to 20 before he was caught at square-leg by Shepherd.
Resuming the third and final morning on 114 for six, Guyana were all out for 156, in just under the first hour. Brian Sattaur began on ten and Pereira seven.
They quickly lost two wickets in the second over when Sattaur was caught off Baker for 11, and three balls later Denesh Mangal was stumped without scoring.
Pereira made 22 but gave a catch to Baker off Tristan Hanley with the total on 133.
Dexter George and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai added 23 for the last-wicket until George was caught by Saunders off Hanley for 17.
Leg-spinner Hanley bagged four for 68 from 20 overs to finish with match- figures of ten for 116.  He was ably supported by off-spinner Baker with three for 25, while fast-bowler Shevon Moore took two for 2.
