GPF arrest GFS to take Joint Services basketball title

THE third Annual Joint Services Basketball tournament concluded yesterday afternoon at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, as four teams challenged one another in a knockout format for the championship trophy, which saw Guyana Police Force (GPF) come out victorious in the end. The lawmen arrested the Guyana Fire Service 27-22 in a low-scoring final which saw heavy defensive play from both teams, even as the Guyana Defence Force defended the third place against the Guyana Prison Service, coming away with a 47-42 victory.
GFS led their opponents 11-8 at the end of the first half, but the eventual winners, through tactical policy, arrested the firemen in the second half to come out on top by a five-point margin at the sound of the final whistle.
Dorian Allicock led the victors with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, copping the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament award and he was supported by A. Chin who scored 6 points that went along with his 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Haslyn Parris led GFS with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists and got support from Travis Devent who netted 5 points, snatched 4 rebounds and was credited with 2 assists, while in the earlier matches, Police defeated Prisons and the firemen took care of GDF.
At the presentation ceremony which followed, GPF’s Sport Officer Assistant Superintendent Colin Boyce congratulated the teams for their participation and wished the newly crowned champs success, noting that the event concludes another on the calendar of events for the quarter.
He also commended the teams for the high level of discipline and the new talent that was unearthed adding, “for a while I thought I was watching the NBA.” He said the Joint Services will be participating in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association League in the not-too-distant future.
