IAC urges APNU, AFC to rethink its position on ERC

THE Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) has expressed its grave concern at the actions of the combined opposition to collapse the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) following the recent budget cuts. The IAC, in a statement yesterday, said it is cognisant of the fact that the ERC is staffed by professional persons from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. “These professionals would have served the Guyanese public with distinction while operating within the confines of the ERC’s mandate,” the committee said.
Currently, uncertainty prevails as to the future of the staff that depends on their jobs for their livelihoods.
The IAC said it therefore condemns the action of the opposition in trying to deny Guyanese the right to work at a place of their choice and for contravening the Constitution of Guyana with regards to the existence of the ERC.
The IAC also called on the opposition to rethink the position it took with regards to the ERC given the importance of such an entity to Guyana.
“Guyana and Guyanese can’t afford the absence of the ERC,” the IAC said.
