Digicel launches triple sport fiesta

TELECOMMUNICATION service provider Digicel (Guyana) Incorporated is at it again when it comes to sports in Guyana, as they launched the first-ever Triple Sports Fiesta in their Kingston boardroom yesterday. Public Relations Manager Shonnet Moore said her company has decided to pump over $200 000 in cash and prizes to clubs affiliated to three sport disciplines, namely the Guyana Hockey Federation (GHF), Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) and Guyana Netball Association (GNA), who will be participating in the event that is set to take place at the National Gymnasium on Sunday, June 9 from 18:00hrs.
In highlighting the day’s activities, Moore said her company was pleased to be associated with the event as they have been constantly involved in sports in Guyana since their inauguration into Corporate Guyana, calling it an exciting opportunity for Digicel.
“We see sports as an integral part of growth in any country and we have been sponsoring sports since we came here and we will continue to do so with the aim to develop sports in Guyana. We see this as another opportunity to showcase some of the lesser known sports in Guyana as well and we wish to invite the public to come out and be a part of this event.”
According to national netball coach Shanomae Baptiste, the GNA will be having their senior national going up against Combined Ballers in the netball category of the day’s event, saying “We are preparing to compete in an international tournament in July and this will serve as a warm-up and yardstick for some of the players.
The GHF, under the astute stewardship of Philip Fernandes, has decided to send its latest tournament winners in Old Fort who won last year’s Diamond Mineral Water (DMW) hockey festival and Hikers who recently won the Bryden’s Indoor tournament, to battle each other in the male category.
This was disclosed by vice-president of the GHF Rawle Davson, who said a female encounter between Flora Georgetown Cricket Club and Hikers will also be contested during the fiesta.
The GVF was represented by Nicholas Fraser who said the highly competitive Port Mourant Training Centre of Berbice and Young Achievers will do battle in the volleyball segment, while several qualifying matches will be played, even though the teams have not been identified as yet.
Meanwhile, Marketing Manager of Digicel, Jacqueline James, emulated Moore by calling on the various supporters to come out and back their respective teams, while saying the possibility of the event – which is a first for Guyana – being an annual one is being looked at closely.
Admission to the event is free and apart from the cash prizes and trophies that will be up for grabs among the competing clubs, Digicel will be making tangible donations to the three governing bodies.
