Defendant charged with larceny of 60 umbrellas remanded

DEXTER Conway, 35, of ‘E’ Field, Sophia, has been charged with larceny of 60 umbrellas from a Chinese store in Georgetown. Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, yesterday, he pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said it was committed on May 1, when he stole the umbrellas, valued $102,000, property of Jiang Xiuhua.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the defendant walked into the business place and picked up a box containing the umbrellas.
A security guard saw the defendant and raised an alarm, causing the latter to be apprehended with the booty and handed over to the police, the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor objected to bail for Conway and informed the Court that the police were looking for the defendant, ever since he had been seen, on camera, assisting a woman to steal a bag in a fast food outlet.
Conway was remanded to prison and will make another court appearance on May 29.
