Dindyal reports…

Chinese electricity infrastructure development for October completion
GUYANA Power & Light (GPL) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Bharat Dindyal announced, yesterday, that laying the US$42M submarine cable for the Chinese infrastructure development project, has been completed.
The conduit, from the new Kingston Plant, in Georgetown across the Demerara River will link the West Coast Demerara sub-station at Vreed-en-Hoop. That has to be connected to two sub-stations and, when energised, would supply 150 megawatts of electricity to West Demerara consumers.
Over the last three weeks, the West Demerara has been hard hit by power failures that led to frequent blackouts.
However, Dindyal said the connection is to be finished in October and, so far, the Chinese are working assiduously to meet that deadline.
He said the primary development process has been accomplished since the Vreed-en-Hoop site was identified and the civil works process has commenced, with the foundation for the building being put down.
Dindyal said, once the submarine cable is laid, the West Demerara will see an improvement in the quality and reliability of power supply.
In addition, he said, with the brand new 36 megawatts plant at Kingston, coupled with other capacity in Demerara, GPL will deliver all the required current to West Demerara.
Dindyal said the cost to lay the submarine cable is in excess of US$5M but the entire project costs US$42M, funded through a loan from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
According to him, the new Kingston Plant will be expanded to provide inter-connection to West Demerara and a new certified transformer will be connected and commissioned for the city.
He said there will a significant boost to supply for consumers and, while the seven new sub-stations in Sophia, Greater Georgetown, cannot have transformers, they have transmission facilities.
Two are located at West Demerara, one in the city, one on the East Bank Demerara and two on East Coast Demerara.
“We are hoping that progress will be sustained this year and, as planned, by the middle of next year, when all these works have been completed, West Demerara would be integrated with East Demerara and Demerara with the Berbice systems, all inter-connected,” Dindyal said.
