At Berbice Assizes…

Defence Counsel granted adjournment in abduction case
THE trial of Shafraz Subhrattaly, who is indicted for abduction at the Berbice Assizes, has been adjourned to next Thursday, on an application by Defence Counsel Kim Kyte-John.
The lawyer informed Justice James Bovell-Drakes that she had only been retained minutes before the case was called on Wednesday.
She said she needed to speak with the accused and peruse the depositions, as she was not representing him during the preliminary inquiry (PI).
The indictment said Subhrattaly, on December 15, 2009, unlawfully took a girl, under the age of 16 years, from the protective care of her parents.
State Counsel Rhondel Weaver is prosecuting.
