CFU Club Championship …

InterMoengotapoe advance to next round;
… Alpha win 2-0 but progression uncertain
SURINAME’S InterMoengotapoe secured a spot in the next round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship after landing their third consecutive victory last night at the Guyana National Stadium.
Alpha United also recorded a victory last night but are not certain of advancing to the next round since they have to await the results of two other groups.
Group Two concluded with a double-header that saw InterMoengotapoe get past Hubentut Fortuna 3-2 in the curtain-raiser and Alpha United defeat Milerock 2-0.
InterMoengotapoe topped the group with nine points from three wins, Alpha United were second with six points (2 wins, 1 loss), Hubentut Fortuna finished third with three points (1 win, 2 losses) and Milerock finished at the bottom with no points as they lost all three games. In the curtain-raiser of the evening, Hubentut and InterMoengotapoe played an intriguing, and closely contested game. Jose Adriano Chacas Gomes, Hubentut’s leading goalscorer drew first blood in the 40th minute to shift the balance of the match after the teams started out playing matching football. Inter bounced back four minutes later from the penalty spot where Jimmy Patrick was successful. The second half saw Hubentut regain the lead in the 60th minute compliments of Dwight Belliot but the opposition were not letting go of the match as they equalised once again in the 65th minute through an Ives Vlyter strike. In the 70th minute, the group’s leading scorer Stefano Ryssel made his presence clear with the deciding goal which took his tally to four. Later in the night Alpha comfortably disposed of Milerock with Anthony Abrams scoring as early as the eighth minute. The remainder of the first half was reminiscent of the Hubentut/Alpha showdown on Thursday night where the latter had numerous opportunities but failed to capitalise on them. It was more of the same in the second half but Milerock’s forward had no chance of troubling the Alpha United goalkeeper thanks to the resolute defending of Howard Lowe, Kelvin McKenzie and Qunicy Madramootoo. Late in the half Daniel Wilson who came on for Andrew Murray Jr at halftime made it a two-possession game with the clock quickly winding down to regulation time.
