Priyanna Ramdhani loses out in bid for fourth badminton title

HAVING won the Girls 10 and Under, 13 and Under and 15 and Under singles title, 10-year-old Priyanna Ramdhani lost out in her bid to make it a helmet-trick of titles, when she went under to Greer Jackson in the Girls 17 and Under finals. This was all part of the action as the Guyana Badminton Association/National Sports Commission Annual Junior Mashramani tournament ended at the Queen’s College Badminton Courts on Tuesday.
The pint-size Priyanna Ramdhani, who was earlier this month named Guyana’s Junior Sportswoman of 2011, won her semifinal matchup in the Under-17 category over Angelica Holder 21-12, 13-21, 19-21 before going under to Jackson who defeated Varsha Boodram 21-10, 21-8 in her semifinal match  21-18, 21-15, while Holder defeated Boodram 21-17, 21-17 to take third place.
Jackson won her second title for the tournament, when she defeated Holder 21-13, 21-18, after they both disposed of Tricia Ramjit and Priscilla Moore 21-12, 21-6 and 21-14, 21-16 respectively in their semifinal matches, while Moore defeated Ramjit 21-5, 21-9 to take third place.
In the Boys Under-19 category, Nicholas Ali defeated Priyanna’s elder brother Narayan 21-11, 21-19 to take that category, after they both chalked up semifinal victories over Avinash Oudit and Christopher Persaud respectively, with Ali winning 21-11, 21-10 and Narayan 21-15, 22-20.
In the quarterfinals, Ali defeated Ryan Amir: 21-9, 21-10, Oudit defeated Sanjave Singh 21-10, 21-12, Persaud stopped Jonathan Mangra: 21-14, 21-9 and Narayan Ramdhani defeated Jonathan Hohenkirk 21-11, 21-13.
The presentation of prizes which will be awarded to the top three finishers of each category will take place on Monday March 5 at the Queen’s College badminton courts from 18:00hrs.
