A woman who appeared in court, on Monday, for allegedly assaulting her husband, managed to secure self-bail after she complained of years of domestic abuse. Maria Chatterpaul of Lot 192 Thomas Street, Kitty appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson and pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on February 24, she unlawfully assaulted her husband Darmendranauth Chatterpaul.
The magistrate put the defendant on $10,000 bail after the prosecution had no objection to bail.
However, the woman informed the court that she had no money to bail herself, and that it was unfair to her, since her husband was at home and had refused to attend court.
She explained that her husband made the allegation against her because she saw a hickey on his neck. She said she was married to the virtual complainant for 17 years, and he would always be unfair to her.
“I used to be quiet before and take these things. I did nothing to him, I had a bottle in my hand and I say I will lash him with it. I fell because he pushed me and my hand hit him, that is how it happen and he went and report me,” said the defendant.
After listening to the defendant, the magistrate sent her on her own recognizance. The case will be called again on March 15.
