Taxi driver remanded for robbery-under-arms

A taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Allan Wilson on a robbery-under-arms charge. Travis Waithe, 22, of Lot 240 Forshaw Street, Queenstown, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on February 22, being armed with a gun; he robbed Sasenarine Balkaran of one gold chain and a cell phone, totalling $200,000.
Police Corporal, Jairam Luckhai, prosecuting, objected to bail based on the prevalence and seriousness of the offence. He also stated that the accused may not return to court if bail is granted.
The defendant told the court that he did not rob anyone, and that four men had taken away his car. He was denied bail, and will return to court on March 15.
