Seventy-year-old remanded for allegedly murdering friend

A seventy-year-old man was on Monday remanded to prison for allegedly beating his friend to death with a piece of wood. Bercliff Marcus, also known as “Baba” (no address given) appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson and was not required to plead to the capital offence of murder.
Particulars of the charge stated that he murdered Clive Cornelius on February 22 at Imbaimadai Landing, Mazaruni.
Police Corporal, Jairam Luckhai, prosecuting, requested that the accused be remanded to prison and that the matter be transferred to Kamarang court.
Luckhia said the deceased and accused were close friends, and on the day in question, the deceased went into the home of the accused. Marcus asked Cornelius why he had entered his home without permission, and an argument ensued, during which Cornelius took a padlock and hit Marcus on the left side foot.
Marcus became annoyed, and picking up a piece of wood, began hitting the deceased. When the deceased was taken to the Imbaimadai Health Centre for medical treatment, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Marcus will return to court on March 19.
