… a sea of colour and rhythm flowing through city streets
GUYANA’S Republic Day 2012 celebration, Mashramani, was fantastic, and is no doubt one of the best in years. Many a reveller was overheard saying, “This is the best evah!”
An overseas group who chose Mashramani over the celebrations in Trinidad commented that the day’s activity is one that they have always wanted to witness. According to them, they have been hearing about the celebration here, and they thought it was just great.
Several ministers of government joint the revelry and danced in the streets.
In his comments to media operatives, Culture and Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony explained that the there were over 30bands on the road and that he was pleased with the turn out, especially of the companies who have been supporting the event over the years. According to him the  atmosphere clearly showed that there was unity among Guyanese,  that they can put their differences behind them and have a good time.
Minister Ramsammy for the first time headed the Agriculture Ministry Band, a break from his usual appearances with the Health Ministry band.

Dazzling array of costumes
Meanwhile, as promised, Guyanese were treated to a dazzling and colourful array of costumes as the Mashramani float parade made its way through city streets and thrilled onlookers.
Costumes depicting Guyanese culture, lifestyle and industries tantalized the eyes of spectators.
Thousands of Guyanese lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the many costumes on display.
Costumes depicting Guyana’s rich vegetation, rare wildlife and many other alluring attractions were showcased, and imitated the Mashramani 2012 theme ‘Mashin with pride keeping we traditions alive’.

Mashramani 2012 saw some 33 bands taking to the road in a colorful spectacle, as they entertained spectators and competed against each other for various titles.
The revelers speaking to this publication said much creativity was seen among the floats and they believe the competition is a stiff one.
A representative from the Region 6 band noted that he is confident that their band will be taking the winners title this year.
Meanwhile persons from Region 10, where the Mashramani concept started, also turned out to march down the streets of Georgetown.
According to  one Lindener, in Linden, Mash is a very significant holiday for the people there,  “ it has been real beautiful because it started there, so the Linden people come out and as you can see we are 100 strong and we’re doing our thing.”
