Three dead, several injured in countrywide weekend accidents

ACCIDENTS that occurred over the weekend have resulted in three men losing their lives and several others sustaining injuries. At about 10:25hrs on Sunday, February 19, pedal cyclist Rajendranauth Rambinjan, 50, of Perseverance, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara allegedly attempted to cross the public road at Cottage, Mahaicony and rode into the path of motor car PGG 751. He was struck down, and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).
The driver is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
In East Berbice on Sunday, Qadir Arkhan, 25, died when the Honda Civic vehicle he was driving slammed into a parked truck on the Crabwood Creek Public Road, Corentyne. An occupant in the vehicle with him is said to be in critical condition in hospital. Reports are that the car was proceeding at a fast rate of speed north along the Crabwood Creek public road when it hit a bump and the driver lost control. The vehicle ran off the road and slammed into the fence of a business place, before slamming into a truck 150 metres away. The truck was thrown into a culvert on impact.
Also on Sunday, minibus driver Teddy Persaud, 35, of Lot 409 Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara was on his way home, at about midnight, when he lost control of the bus he was driving and crashed into a parked truck at Stanleytown Public Road.
The father of two reportedly died on the spot. Public-spirited citizens took half of an hour to extricate him from the minibus. At the time, he was the only person in the vehicle.
Later on Sunday night, more than five persons sustained minor injuries when several vehicles collided at Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara.
The Police Traffic Department yesterday revealed that, for 2012, 15 deaths were recorded in 14 road accidents; while for the corresponding period last year, 21 persons lost their lives in 21 road accidents.
